The Stark Museum of Art houses a research library. The library’s collection focuses on art of the American West, natural history and early botanicals. The collection is particularly strong in the subject area of the Taos Society of Artists, and the artists represented in the museum’s collection. The Rare Book and Archives section of the Library houses more than 150 individual letters by the naturalist John J. Audubon to colleagues, friends and family; a journal kept by Audubon during one of his expeditions and a journal of the artist Paul Kane. An unexpected treasure in the collection is seven Books of Hours, illuminated manuscripts from the late medieval period. The library is open to scholars by appointment only.
The bibliographies listed below offer recommended readings and other resources on selected artists in the Stark Museum Collection. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, contact the Library and Archive Manager by phone at 409.886.2787 or by e-mail at: Jhconnors@starkmuseum.org
